Thorncliffe Park - From First Story to New Story Sponsored by Myseum of Toronto Thorncliffe Park in Toronto has a history that few know about. It was a planned neighbourhood built primarily in the 1960s and currently known as \'Canada\'s Arrival City\'. It is a high density neighbourhood with approximately 50 countries represented in the largest elementary and kindergarten schools in North America but prior to development there was a great deal of other activity. #2 of 6 vignettes nominated for a Heritage Toronto Award 2014, preserving community history. John and Mary (Hutchison) Lea moved to the area now known as Leaside. This video slide show of archival photographs allows you to experience a resemblence of what life was like for them and introduces the arrival of three railway companies: the Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR), the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), and the Canadian National Railway (CN). -

#3 of a series of videos nominated for a 2014 Heritage Toronto Award. A video slide show of archival photographs depicting Leaside, Ontario from 1910 - 1929. The Canadian Northern Railway planned and incorporated the Town of Leaside in 1913. World War One had a major influence on the area with a military training site and munitions factory. The post war years brought industrial and infrastructure growth. Influencial industries included Canada Wire and Cable, and Durant Motors. Cultural highlights were the Toronto Flying Club and Thorncliffe Racetrack. -

Thorncliffe Park is developed where the racetrack stood. The industial area thrives. Leaside culture continues to grow. In 1998, Leaside amalgamates with the City of Toronto. -
